Box Score 2 FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Franklin College men's tennis team put together a successful Sunday (Apr. 10) of competition, beating Transylvania and Manchester to claim their first conference wins of the spring.
In the opener, the Grizzlies (7-5, 2-1 HCAC) grinded out a hard-fought 6-3 win over the Pioneers before capping the day with an 8-1 win over Manchester in the afternoon session.
Franklin 6 – Transylvania 3
The three doubles matches proved to be a sign of things to come, with each point tightly contested. The top doubles team of Ty McCory and Dustin Garrison were 8-7 winners with No. 3 pairing of Nathan Jarboe and Matt Leming claiming an 8-2 win to give the hosts a lead heading into singles play.
Jarboe clawed back from down a set to win 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-0 at No. 3 singles and Owen Pickerill did the same at No. 4 singles to win 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Of the six singles matches, four would go to three sets with each team winning two points.
Layton Stienecker snagged the decisive point with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles. Dustin Garrison also earned a point, winning his No. 2 singles match by default.
Franklin 8 – Manchester 1
All three doubles matches went the Grizzlies' way with McCory and Garrison winning at No. 1 8-3, Pickerill and Stienecker taking an 8-1 win at No. 2 and Jarboe and Leming teaming up for an 8-2 win at the No. 3 position.
Singles play saw the Grizzlies take all five of their points in straight sets. McCory was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at the No. 1 spot with Garrison winning 6-3, 6-2 from the No. 2 position. Jarboe won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles, Leming was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 5 singles and Nolan Patterson won 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 position.
