Box Score 2 MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Franklin College men's tennis team notched their first wins of the spring in style, taking matchups with Berea and Maryville (Tenn.) on Saturday and Sunday (Mar. 5-6).
The Grizzlies began their road swing with a 7-2 victory over the Mountaineers to open up the weekend. A day later in Tennessee, Franklin earned a 9-0 sweep of Maryville to improve their record to 5-4 on the year.
Franklin 7 – Berea 2
Doubles play was all Grizzlies, as they surged out to a big lead with the opening three points. Ty McCory and Dustin Garrison were 8-4 winners at No. 1 doubles, Owen Pickerill and Layton Stieneker earned an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles and Nathan Jarboe and Matt Leming rolled to an 8-2 win in the final doubles match.
Singles play saw the Grizzlies claim wins in the 3-6 spots in the lineup in straight sets. Jarboe won 6-1, 6-0 at the third spot, Pickerill was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at the No. 4 position, Leming took a 6-2, 6-0 win from the No. 5 spot and Gavin Parker rounded things out with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the six spot.
Franklin 9 – Maryville 0
The final matchup of the weekend was all Grizzlies, starting with doubles play. Just as they did the day before, the teams of McCory/Garrison (8-5) and Pickerill/Stieneker (8-1) won at the top two spots. Jarboe and Parker teamed up at No. 3 doubles to earn an 8-0 win.
All six Grizzlies won their singles matchups in straight sets with McCory, Garrison, Jarboe, Pickerill, Leming and Stieneker playing in the 1-6 spots.
