Box Score FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Franklin College men's tennis team lined up for their second match of the fall on Friday (Sept. 17) night, taking on the University of St. Francis Cougars for the first of four dual matches set for the weekend.
The Grizzlies (1-1) got big wins in singles play from Matt Leming and Owen Pickerill and that allowed them to hold off the Cougars (2-8) by a 4-3 score.
Franklin picked up their first win of the night at No. 1 doubles play when Ty McCory and Dustin Garrison claimed a thrilling 7-6 (10-4) win. It was the first career doubles win for Garrison and after the Grizzlies earned the No. 3 doubles win by default, Franklin laid claim to the doubles point.
The Grizzlies moved a step closer to victory thanks to senior Matt Leming, who won in straight sets at No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-2. Pickerill would earn his first career singles win after battling back from a first set loss to win a thriller 1-6, 6-1, 12-10. Franklin's win by default at No. 6 singles would clinch victory for Franklin.
The Grizzlies are back in action on Saturday (Sept. 18) with a pair of matches at home against Manchester and Kentucky Wesleyan. First serve of the day from Grizzly Park is set for 9:00 a.m.
