RECAP | Grizzlies Gut Out Win Over Manchester, Run Winning Streak to Four

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Franklin men's tennis team put their unbeaten conference record and three-match winning streak on the line on Sunday (Apr. 7) afternoon, taking on the Manchester Spartans at Indy Racquet Club East.

In a back-and-forth contest between two evenly-matches conference teams, the Grizzlies (6-6, 3-0 HCAC) staved off the Spartans (3-6, 1-3 HCAC) to earn a 5-4 win and even up their record.

Franklin claimed the first point of the afternoon in No. 3 doubles play when Ty McCory and Josh Stewart rolled to an 8-2 win. Manchester evened things up with a victory in a meeting of the top doubles teams, setting the stage for the No. 2 doubles teams to determine who took the lead into singles play. The match would require a tie-breaker, but Franklin's tandem of Jacob Zachary and Zach Lester would hold on for an 8-7 (5) win and the all-important second point.

Action shifted to singles play where Blake Amonett picked up his first point of the day at the No. 1 position with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-4 victory. Dean Elrod inched the Grizzlies closer to victory with his 6-0, 6-1 victory from the No. 4 position, just ahead of Stewart who sealed the victory with an identical 6-0, 6-1 win in No. 5 singles play.

Franklin looks to continue their winning streak next Saturday (Apr. 13), when they hit the road to face the Anderson Ravens. First serve is set for 11:00 a.m.
