By: Jake Renie

WARSAW, IN – The Franklin College men's tennis team came together for their first win of the spring on Saturday (Feb. 23). After a slow start in doubles, the Grizzlies bounced back with five singles wins to capture a 6-3 win over Alma College.

The Grizzlies came up on the short end after doubles, dropping a pair of tightly-contested matches while picking up one point.  Winning the only Franklin doubles match was Jacob Zachary and Zach Lester, who battled for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles. However, the Scots were able to sneak away with slim victories in each of the other two doubles contests to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.

The momentum started swinging in the Grizzlies' favor, when singles play began. Blake Amonett dominated the matchup of the top singles players, 6-2, 6-2. Zachary picked up his second point of the afternoon, claiming a 7-6 (5), 4-6, (10-6) from the No. 2 position.

Dean Elrod got Franklin within a point of victory with a 6-2, 6-1 victory from the No. 4 position score. Ty McCory was just as dominant at the five-spot, closing out the comeback victory with another 6-2, 6-1 victory. Josh Stewart put the exclamation point on the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the six position.

The Grizzlies will return home to prepare for their spring openers which takes play on Sunday, March 3. Franklin will face Indiana Southeast at 10:00 a.m. and Illinois Wesleyan at 4:00 p.m.
