Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College men's tennis concluded the 2016 regular season with a 6-3 home loss to Transylvania University on Monday from the Mickel-Hoover Tennis Complex.
Junior Ethan Caldwell (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) was victorious in doubles and singles action to lead the Grizzlies. He teamed with sophomore Alex Hammer (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) to pick up an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles. In singles, he rebounded after losing the first set to win a deciding third-set tiebreaker on the No. 2 court. Caldwell and Transylvania's Zachary Meikle split the first two sets by 6-3 set scores. Caldwell won the third-set tiebreaker 10-4.
Sophomore Kyle Sauley (Madison, Ind./Madison) earned a three-set victory at No. 3 singles by winning a tiebreaker 10-8 in the deciding frame. He forced the third set by winning the second set by a 7-5 score.
Freshman Dean Elrod (Milan, Ind./Milan) lost a hard-fought match in three sets. After winning the opening frame in a tiebreaker he lost the final two sets by 6-3 and 10-4 in a tiebreaker on the No. 4 singles court.
Franklin concluded the 2016 regular season with a 6-9 record and a 4-4 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference record. The Grizzlies will be the No. 5 seed in the postseason tournament. The team begins the conference tournament on Friday, May 6 against an opponent and time to be determined from the West Indy Racquet Club.
