Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College men's tennis team evened its Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) record with a 6-3 victory over Anderson University on Friday evening.
The Grizzlies took a 2-1 lead after doubles with wins on the No. 1 and 3 courts. Junior Ethan Caldwell (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) and sophomore Alex Hammer (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) earned an 8-4 triumph at the top of the doubles lineup. Senior Melissa Sanders (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) and freshman Karen Dringenburg (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) dropped only two games at No. 3 doubles.
Anderson won a tiebreaker by an 8-6 score on the No. 2 doubles court to keep the margin at one point heading into the six singles matches.
Franklin (4-8, 3-3 HCAC) recorded victories in four of those six matches to secure the league win. Caldwell won by 7-5 and 6-2 scores at No. 2 singles to start the strong singles play. Dringenburg earned a straight-set triumph at No. 6 singles by dropping only three games to give Franklin a 4-1 lead.
Sanders clinched the victory with a hard-fought three-set win at No. 5 singles. After dropping the opening set by a 6-2 score she rebounded to win the second set by losing only two games. Sanders completed the comeback with a 6-2 score in the deciding third set.
Hammer rounded out the winners with a three-set triumph at No. 1 singles. He lost only three games in the second and third sets after losing the opening frame by a 7-5 score.
Franklin returns to action on Saturday, April 23 at 9 a.m. when it hosts Johnson University from the Mickel-Hoover Tennis Complex.
