Richmond, Ind. - The Franklin College men's tennis team ended Earlham College's 34-match Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) winning streak with a 5-4 road win on Saturday afternoon.
Franklin (4-5, 2-1 HCAC) took a 2-1 lead after doubles with strong play on the No. 2 and 3 courts. Senior Robby Woehrle (Avon, Ind./Avon) teamed with junior Arjun Bhalla (Nashik Maharashtra, India) to pick up an 8-4 triumph at No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Ethan Caldwell (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) and senior Luke Snyder (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) followed with an 8-5 victory on the No. 2 doubles court.
The Grizzlies maintained the momentum by splitting six singles matches to earn the 5-4 league win. The team won on the No. 4, 5, and 6 singles courts. Snyder dropped only two games in winning 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Woehrle recorded a 6-4, 6-1 triumph at No. 5 singles. Bhalla picked up a straight-set victory at No. 6 singles by 6-3, 6-2 scores.
Franklin becomes the second school to ever defeat Earlham in a conference regular-season match.
The Grizzlies return to action on Sunday, April 12 at noon when it travels to Transylvania University for a conference match in Lexington, Kentucky.
