Indianapolis, Ind. - The Franklin College men's tennis team recorded its first victory of the season with a 6-3 triumph over Greenville College at the West Indy Racquet Club on Friday evening.
The Grizzlies (1-3) won on four of the six singles courts to pick up the win after three hard-fought doubles matches.
Sophomore Ethan Caldwell (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) teamed with senior Luke Snyder (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) to pick up an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles.
Greenville (2-2) squared the match with an 8-6 win on the No. 3 court. The tandem of senior Ryan Hammer (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) and freshman Alex Hammer (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) gave Franklin a 2-1 edge with a 7-5 victory in a tiebreaker.
The Grizzlies continued the momentum into singles with three straight-set triumphs. Senior Robby Woehrle (Avon, Ind./Avon) dropped only five games winning on the No. 5 singles court. Freshman Arjun Bhalla (India) defeated Greenville's Justin McDonald 7-6 (5), 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
Ryan Hammer won a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 (1) match at the top of the singles lineup. Alex Hammer rallied from dropping the opening set to round out Friday's winners. He did not lose a game in the second set and then won a third-set tiebreaker 10-6.
Franklin returns to action on Wednesday, March 11, at 4 p.m. when it hosts Indiana Tech from the Mickel-Hoover Tennis Complex.
