Box Score Hanover, Ind. - Sophomore Braden Pelley (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) broke a 2-2 tie with a pitch-hit run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning as the Franklin College baseball team earned a 3-2 road Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) victory over Hanover College on Wednesday.
Franklin (15-10, 6-5 HCAC) started the eighth inning with junior Tyler Ison (Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland Community) drawing a walk. Freshman Cody Shipley (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) moved Ison into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Then, Pelley delivered a single to plate Ison and give the Grizzlies the 3-2 advantage.
Senior Taylor Glaze (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Central Catholic) tossed eight quality innings and improved to 1-1 on the season. The left hander struck out eight batters in the victory. Senior Chris Hoopingarner (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) tossed a scoreless ninth inning to record the save.
Hanover (8-13, 4-7 HCAC) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a single by Matt
Brooks. The Grizzlies tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning on a single from sophomore Joe Ardizzone (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli). The base hit scored junior Jameson Brock (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville).
Franklin took a 2-1 lead an inning later on a solo home run from senior Rickey DuBois (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) – his first homer of the season.
The hosts tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning on a single from Matt Newman.
Then, Pelley's base hit in the eighth inning put the Grizzlies ahead for good.
Individually, junior Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) led the eight-hit attack with two hits. Freshman Mitchell Sorrells (Brookville, Ind./Franklin County) and Brock each recorded a double.
Franklin returns to action on Friday, April 11 at 4 p.m. when it hosts HCAC-leading Manchester University in a three-game series from John P. McDowell Field.
