Baseball Wins Longest Game in School History at Transylvania

Box Score

Lexington, Ky. - The Franklin College baseball team plated four runs in the top of the 14th inning to secure a 9-5 victory in 14 innings over Transylvania University to open a three-game Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) series from Lexington, Kentucky. The contest marked the longest game in school history.

Sophomore Braden Pelley (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) broke the 5-5 tie with a triple to plate sophomore Joe Ardizzone (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli). Sophomore Jason Simpkins (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) followed with a run-scoring single to score Pelley. The lead grew to 9-5 after junior Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) singled home freshman Cody Shipley (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) and senior Scott Windler (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Central Catholic).

Senior pitcher Taylor Glaze (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Central Catholic) retired the Pioneers in order in the bottom of the 14th inning to secure the victory. The left hander tossed six scoreless innings in relief and struck out six batters.

Franklin (18-12, 9-7 HCAC) now moves past Transylvania for fourth place in the conference standings. The top four teams qualify for the conference tournament.

Friday's 14-inning game surpassed four 13-inning games in the Franklin baseball record book. The team set a single-game school record with 56 at bats. Junior Jameson Brock (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) had a single-game record eight at bats in the contest. Brock tallied four hits and scored one run.

The Grizzlies took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. A run-single from Windler plated Brock, who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning. Later, a wild pitch allowed Shipley to score the second run.

Transylvania (14-15, 8-8 HCAC) would take a 3-2 lead following a two-run home run by Kody Ross in the fifth inning.

The visitors quickly tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning on an error that allowed Ardizzone to score. Franklin regained the lead in the seventh inning on consecutive run-scoring doubles by Frey and senior Rickey DuBois (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn). DuBois' double gave the team a 5-3 lead.

Transylvania rallied in the eighth inning when Trey Simpson connected on a two-run home run to tie the game at 5-5. Both teams were unable to push across a run in the extra innings until the 14th inning. Transylvania stranded two runners in scoring position in the 11th inning and Franklin had the bases loaded in the 13th inning.

Brock's four hits led the Grizzlies' 14-hit attack. Shipley added three hits, while Windler and Frey each recorded two hits.

Franklin returns to action on Saturday, April 19 when the two teams play a doubleheader, starting at noon. Live statistics of both games will be available here. In-game updates will also be available on Twitter (@FCAthletics) and on Facebook (www.facebook.com/FranklinCollegeAthletics).
