Franklin track and field is two days into the HCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The women currently sit in sixth with 12 points, while the men are in fifth with 18 points.
On day one, freshman
Joe Johnson got the scoring started for the men with his discus. His mark of 41.96 meters (137 feet, 8 inches) was good for seventh place and was a two-meter personal best.
Starting off day two, junior
Caleb Pipes finished seventh in the hammer throw with a personal-best toss of 46.52 meters (152-7).
The distance crew was the first to score on the track. Sophomore
Zach Schroeder claimed fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, crossing the line in 9:50.00. That PB strengthens his hold on second in school history. Senior
Wynn Wellington and frosh
Ariana Sheckler finished second and fifth, respectively, in the women's race. Wellington ran a PB of 12:02.08 to place her number three in school history, while Sheckler ran a lifetime best to take eighth all-time.
Starting off the prelims, frosh
Cora Mink qualified for the women's 100 hurdle finals, in a new PB of 18.02.
In the men's 100-meter dash, sophomore
Brayden Wilkins and frosh
Myles Baker both made it to the finals with the second and sixth-fastest marks. Freshman
Amani Byrd made the women's final with a time of 13.12.
Wilkins returned in the 200, claiming his heat in 21.99 seconds to secure a spot in the finals. Frosh
Alex Mast claimed fourth in the prelims (26.44), a new PB, to move onto the final.
The 400-meter squad had themselves a day. On the guys' side, three Grizzlies qualified for the finals: freshmen
Khalid Amadou (48.81) andÂ
Austin Menefee (49.75) and junior
Steven Scott (49.55). Mast ran 1:00.37 to take fourth in the women's preliminaries.
Junior
Russell Bilohlavek, in his outdoor conference debut in the 400 hurdles, crossed in third to make it to Saturday's final.
Sophomore
William Hirsch rounded out the evening on the track in the 10,000 meters, picking up silver in a new PB (32:08.24).
Finishing off the night, first-year
Hampton Crowe placed eighth in the long jump, leaping 6.62m (21-8.75).
The Grizzlies will finish out the meet on Saturday.
