Franklin men's golf had a share of the lead after Saturday's opening round of the Earlham Spring Invitational. By tournament's end on Sunday, the Grizzlies were alone at the top.
Paced by strong second rounds from
Nick Stewart and
Angel Soria, the Griz pulled away for a seven-stroke victory over Shawnee State at Richmond Elks. Franklin finished with a two-day team score of 611 (+51) on the par-70 layout.
It's the first team tournament win for the Grizzlies since they finished first in this same event two years ago.
Stewart carded matching rounds of 74 on both days to finish with an 8-over-par 148, tying him for third place on the individual leaderboard. The junior had three birdies during Sunday's round.
Soria, meanwhile, finished at 76-75—151, good for a fifth-place tie. He birdied the first hole Sunday and stayed steady the rest of the way, parring his final five holes.
The Grizzlies also got top-20 finishes from
Tyler Young (75-80—155, tied for 15th) and
Hunter Riggs (78-79—157, tied for 19th).
Xander Hutton and
Kendall Scott, the latter competing as an individual, both ended the tournament at 27 over par, tied with one another in 44th place.
Next for the Griz will be a trip to Pebblebrook Golf Club in Noblesville, Indiana for the DePauw Spring Clash this coming Sunday (April 26). That event will mark the end of the regular-season schedule.
