Women's Golf Preview: Franklin Squad Small, But Talented

3/6/2026 9:15:00 AM

With just two players on the roster, Franklin women's golf won't be in the running for any team championships this spring. But that doesn't mean that the Grizzlies don't have anything to play for.

Sophomore Alex Goodwin and freshman Mayson Hays both have some momentum coming off of solid fall seasons, and coach Jamie Haywood is hopeful that will carry over into the upcoming spring tournaments, starting with this weekend's trip to Tennessee for the Music City Shootout (March 7-8).

"Both players did really well in the fall," Haywood said. "From our first tournament to our last one in the fall, scores went down. Just really working on easing the emotions and anxieties, and keeping cool, calm and collected on the course. Being out there playing the game, and have fun doing it."

Goodwin finished out the fall with a third-place showing at the HCAC Preview, carding back-to-back rounds of 84 and landing on the all-tournament team. Hays was 17th. Both players improved their placement and scoring across each of the three tournaments, and Haywood believes there's more to come.

Both Goodwin and Hays, she says, are focused and practice hard.

"Keeping them focusing on our short game is probably the most important area," Haywood said of the path to even greater improvement this spring. "That's definitely where we can get our scores down even more out on the course."

One plus of only having two players is that Haywood won't have as much ground to cover on the course, so she'll be able to get to either one quickly if a need arises. If anything, she says, she'll need to rein herself in and not be overbearing — just let them play but be ready to jump in.

The next step, of course, is trying to add more players to build a full team around Goodwin and Hays — but for now, the Grizzlies will ride with what they hope is a dynamic young duo.
