TERRE HAUTE, Ind. —
Franklin women's track and field boasts a large freshman class, and the newcomers made their presence felt right away at Rose-Hulman on Friday night, leading the way to a third-place finish in the first installment of the Friday Night Spikes series.
Freshman
Grace Tincher stole the show for the Grizzlies, setting a school record in her first attempt on the long jump and eventually extending it out to 5.46 meters (17 feet, 11 inches). That leap not only shattered a mark that had stood since 2013, but also has her currently ranked 19th nationally.
In addition, Tincher placed fourth in the 60-meter dash; her preliminary time of 7.95 seconds is the second fastest in school history.
Fellow frosh Alexandria Mast kicked off her career placing second at 400 meters in 1:04.29, which places her 10th on the school's all-time list.
The distance crew saw success in the 3,000 meters. Sophomore
Fiona Sodrel was the front-runner of the group, claiming third with a 30-second personal best of 11:45.61. Coming in fourth, senior
Wynn Wellington secured a 31-second PB of her own (11:46.34). Freshman
Ariana Sheckler rounded out the trio in eighth (12:26.90).
In the field, sophomore
Izzy Egan high jumped her way to a new personal best and a first-place finish, leaping 1.46 meters (4-9.5). Following her in second, freshman
Alaina Kellerman cleared 1.43 meters (4-8.25).
Rounding out the night, freshman
Savanna Miley and Kellerman pole vaulted towards third- and seventh-place finishes, respectively. Miley cleared 2.77 meters (9-1), good for third in school history, while Kellerman went 2.47 meters (8-1.25), moving into seventh all-time.
The squad will be back in Terre Haute next Friday (Jan. 23) for the second Friday Night Spikes meet.
