After nearly three weeks off, Franklin men's tennis resumed its fall season at the ITA Central Regional in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The Grizzlies were defeated in all of their first-round matches on Friday.
Jaden Wells suffered a 6-4, 6-1 singles setback against Jesus Soto Bossa of Principia, while
Clark Hersam lost to Jean Sanabria of Greenville, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0. In doubles,
Marcus Cox and
Shay Kyser lost 8-5 against Jack Forlenza and Eli Bartek of Webster.
Despite the losses, Franklin coach Ryan Hammer was pleased with his players' efforts.
"It was a solid showing and great experience for us to play against the best teams across the Central Region," he said. "We competed very well in our main draw singles matches against teams that we will see again in the spring."
In singles consolation matches on Saturday, Hersam advanced to the round of 16 with an 8-4 win against Brendan Morrison of Albion — the Grizzlies' first ITA singles win in recent memory, according to Hammer — before taking an 8-4 loss against Earlham's Dreek Saha. Wells lost to Wooster's Ian Royse, 8-2, while Cox and Kyser had to withdraw from consolation play due to injury.
Next up for the Grizzlies is a home match against IU East on Thursday (Oct. 2).
