Box Score 2 INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Franklin College baseball team completed a successful weekend on Sunday (Mar. 13) afternoon, taking two games from Alma College to complete a four-game sweep of the Scots.
The Grizzlies (8-3) scored eight straight runs to close out the opening game and earn an 11-9 comeback win. Game two saw Franklin jump on Alma (3-9) early and ride their momentum to a 12-2 win in seven innings.
Game One: Franklin 11 – Alma 9
Alma took advantage of the wind blowing out with a two-run home run in the first before Logan Demkovich cut the lead in half with a first inning sac fly. The Scots plated two more in the second but Franklin got them right back in the bottom of the inning on RBI hits from Colby Reed and Demkovich to get back within one.
Alma tacked on five more runs in the third and fourth frames to make it 9-3. AJ Sanders got a run back in the fourth with an RBI single but the Grizzlies would go quietly in each of the next two innings.
Things changed in the seventh with the bottom of the order getting the Grizzlies back in striking distance. Adam Taylor roped a two-out RBI single and Sean Sullivan followed with a three-run blast to get the deficit down to 9-8. One inning later, Demkovich tied the game with a lead-off home run and Taylor drove in the go-ahead run as part of a three-run frame.
Damian Tillie (1-0) was excellent in five innings of relief, allowing one earned run on three hits with nine strikeouts. Alex Reinoehl set the Scots down in order in the ninth to earn his first save of the year. Demkovich finished 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Game Two: Franklin 12 – Alma 2 (7 inn.)
Demkovich continued his torrid pace at the plate with a two-run homer in the first that put Franklin in front for good. Sullivan cracked his second long ball of the day an inning later and Matthew Earley put the game out of reach with a three-run blast in the bottom of the third to make it 6-1. Franklin tacked on two in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the seventh to close things out.
Demkovich and Reed each went 3-for-3 in game two with Sullivan also putting together a three-hit game. Earley finished with a team-high four RBI. Making his first start of the year and getting the win was senior Nick Elmendorf (1-0), who allowed one unearned run on five hits with four Ks over five innings of work. Sam Peck and Chris Foote eac allowed one hit in an inning of relief.
