RECAP | Lipscomb, Demkovich Play Hero; Wright Sets Career RBI Record in Extra-Inning Win against Pioneers

Box Score

FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Franklin College baseball team pulled out a miraculous late-game comeback on Tuesday (Apr. 27) night, rallying from four runs down in the ninth to force extras before Logan Demkovich walked it off in the 11th in a 15-14 win over Transylvania.

Nick Wright and Tysen Lipscomb both went deep for Franklin (17-9), who got a little bit of payback on the Pioneers (22-9) two days after dropping a pair of games to Transy in Kentucky. It was an extra-special afternoon for Wright, as the Bloomington, Ind.-native drove in three runs to break Nick Stoia's career RBI record and give him 162 for his career.

Transy got on the board first with two in the first but Franklin would grab their first lead of the day in their first trip to the plate. A string of hit batters and wild pitches led to Quenton Wellington scoring on a wild pitch and Nick Wright made it a 3-2 game with a two-run blast, moving him past Frank Podkul for second on the program's career home run list with 30.

Franklin plated three more in the second, with one coming on an error and two coming on back-to-back two out singles from Jacob Heuchan and Lipscomb that made it 6-2 after two innings.

But the Pioneers would take advantage of the wind howling out at McDowell Field, belting four home runs and rattling off nine straight runs to take an 11-6 lead after 5 ½ innings. The bottom of the sixth brought Heuchan home on a wild pitch and Jake Bryant plating two with a single to cut the Transy lead to 11-9 with three innings to go.

Franklin cut the lead in half in the eighth when a throwing error allowed Lipscomb to hustle home, but the Pioneers responded with three in the top of the ninth to take a 14-10 lead. Franklin wasted no time starting their ninth-inning rally, with the first two batters getting on base and Wright blasting a deep double to right field that scored Wellington to make it 14-11.

Demkovich and Heuchan were retired to bring Lipscomb to the dish, and the sophomore catcher sent a 3-1 pitch the opposite way for his second home run of the year to tie things up.

Demkovich capped the rally two innings later with Ryan Bixler on second, smacking a 2-1 pitch into the right field corner and sending the Grizzly bench into a frenzy.

Krae Sparks (1-0) was nails out of the bullpen, allowing two hits and striking out three over the final three innings. Nick McClanahan got the start and fanned five batters over five innings of work.

The Grizzlies will be back at it on Saturday (May 1), heading to Richmond, Ind. to take on the Earlham Quakers. The two teams will complete a suspended game from earlier this season before playing a scheduled double-header.
