Box Score 2 WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Franklin College baseball team continued their four-game Florida trip on Monday (Feb. 24) morning, taking on Cabrini University in a double-header featuring two teams that recorded 31 wins a year ago.
The opening contest saw the Grizzlies (2-1) hold off the Cavaliers' (3-2) ninth-inning rally for a 10-9 victory. Cabrini salvaged a split on the day, taking the second contest 12-6. Both games were seven-inning affairs.
Game One: Franklin 10 – Cabrini 9
Alex Mis got the Grizzlies on the board in the bottom of the first inning, plating Quenton Wellington with an RBI ground out to cut Cabrini's lead to 2-1. That score would hold until the bottom of the third, when Franklin broke out for five run to take the lead for good.
Nick Wright put the Grizzlies ahead with a one-out, two-run home run and Logan Demkovich knocked in a run with a bases-loaded single later in the inning. With the bags full and two outs, two throwing errors allowed a pair of runs to score, making it 6-2 Grizzlies after three innings.
The Cavaliers cut Franklin's lead in half with two runs in the fourth, but the Grizzlies would get those plus insurance back in their half of the inning. Demkovich knocked in another run with a single and Jake Bryant brought in his first two runs of the year with a single later in the inning. Bryant added another RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, making it 10-6 Grizzlies heading into the final inning.
Cabrini plated three runs in the seventh and had the winning run on first with two outs. But the Cavaliers' run ended there as Quenton Wellington snagged a sinking line drive for the final out, preserving the win.
Gavin White (1-0) earned the win in his first career start, scattering eight hits and striking out three over four innings. Tyler Wick and Alex Reinoehl combined to throw the final three innings.
Game Two: Cabrini 12 – Franklin 6
The Grizzlies found themselves in an early hole after the Cavaliers scored four times in their first trip to the plate. Franklin cut the lead in half in the top of the second thanks to a sac fly from Wellington and an RBI single from Ryan Bixler. The Grizzlies headed into the bottom of the third down by a pair, getting their third run of the day on when Alex Mis scored on a double play ball.
Three more Cabrini runs in the third provided a setback but Franklin answered with three of their own in the fourth, getting back within striking distance at 8-6. But the Grizzlies would go quiet over the final three innings, suffering their first loss of the year.
Wellington finished with two of the Grizzlies' four hits while Wright, Mis and Pawley all drew two walks. Wright (0-1) got the start on the mound, striking out three over two innings of work. Tyler Robinson and Trevor Spilker made their first appearance of the year in relief.
Franklin concludes their Florida trip on Tuesday (Feb. 24) morning, taking on the Capital Crusaders in one nine-inning contest. First pitch is set for 9:00 a.m.
