Baseball Uses Big Inning to Earn Split of Saturday Doubleheader with Bluffton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College baseball team scored 11 runs in the second inning during a 14-4 victory in the second contest of Saturday's doubleheader split with Bluffton University on Saturday in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play from John P. McDowell Field.

The Beavers scored three runs in the fifth inning to break a tie during a 4-1 triumph in the opener.

After Bluffton scored in the second inning, Franklin sent 17 batters to the plate and collected 10 hits during an 11-run bottom of the second inning. Senior Chase Steinbrunner (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) started the scoring with a single to drive home junior Jacob Troxell (Lapel, Ind./Lapel). Senior Drew Kammerer (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) followed with a run-scoring double to score senior Braden Pelley (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North).

A two-run double from freshman Jordan Clark (Connersville, Ind./Connersville) gave the Grizzlies a 4-1 lead. Consecutive base hits to drive home runs from sophomore Frank Podkul (Schererville, Ind./Andrean) and senior Joe Ardizzone (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) scored the team's sixth run of the frame. Kammerer added a two-run double later in the frame to cap the scoring.

The 11 runs scored in the frame are the second most scored in an inning this season. The team scored 13 runs during its 21-18 win over Earlham College on April 2.

Franklin stretched the lead to 13-1 after a pair of sacrifice fly outs in the fifth inning from Ardizzone and Troxell.

Bluffton scored three runs in the sixth inning, but could not get any closer than nine runs over the final three innings. A double from Ardizzone in the seventh inning scored Clark to push the margin to 10 runs, 14-4.

Franklin tallied 17 hits in the victory, including five players with multiple-hit performances. Clark went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Ardizzone drove in three runs and collected two hits. Pelley recorded four hits and scored two runs in the second game. Kammerer and Podkul each rounded out the multiple-hit performers.

Senior Hayden Cleveland (Brownsburg, Ind./Cardinal Ritter) struck out seven batters over six innings to pick up his first victory of the season. Sophomore Mitchell Caster (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) tossed three scoreless innings in relief to record his first collegiate save.

In the opener, sophomore Jackson Freed (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) hit a run-scoring single in the second inning to score Ardizzone and tie the contest at 1-1. Bluffton had pushed across a run in the first inning.

The visitors scored three times in the fifth inning to break the tie and eventually pick up the victory.

The two teams conclude the three-game HCAC series with a single nine-inning contest on Sunday, April 24 at noon from John P. McDowell Field. Live video and statistics of the game will be available.
