Box Score 2 Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College baseball team took two of three games against Albion College during its 2016 home-opening series by splitting Saturday's doubleheader from John P. McDowell Field.
The Grizzlies recorded a 3-2 win in 10 innings in the opener, before Albion picked up an 8-3 victory in the series finale. Franklin (3-4) won 4-3 on Friday to open the weekend action.
Freshman Tanner Nicholson (Greencastle, Ind./Greencastle) hit a walk-off sacrifice fly to score freshman Nick Brems (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) in the 10th inning to pick up the victory.
Trailing 2-1 in the ninth inning, the Grizzlies forced extra innings with a single by sophomore Jackson Freed (Westfield, Ind./Westfield). Nicholson scored the tying run on the base hit.
Franklin took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when senior Braden Pelley (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The advantage stayed at one run until Albion's Michael Fischbach hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning to give the Britons (1-2) a 2-1 lead. Franklin junior reliever Jacob McMain (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) struck out four batters and did not allow a run in his 2.2 innings to pick up the victory.
In Saturday's second game, Albion took an 8-0 lead in the seventh inning behind two three-run frames in the fourth and seventh innings. Franklin got onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning on a bases-loaded walk to senior Chase Steinbrunner (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli).
The Grizzlies pushed across two runs in the eighth inning on a run-scoring single by sophomore Mitch Schuman (St. Leon, Ind./East Central). The base hit scored senior Drew Kammerer (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon). A sacrifice fly by senior Joe Ardizzone (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) scored Nicholson to cut the deficit to 8-3. However, a groundout with the bases loaded ended the threat.
