Box Score 2 North Manchester, Ind. - The Franklin College baseball team scored one run in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to pick up a 6-3 win over Manchester University on Saturday in the 2015 season finale. The two teams split the doubleheader with the Spartans winning the opener 13-4.
With the game tied at 3-3 in the seventh inning, senior Jameson Brock (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) hit a double to score senior Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo). The hit gave the visitors the 4-3 lead.
Frey would later single home junior Chase Steinbrunner (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) in the eighth inning. Franklin took a 6-3 lead in the ninth inning on a run-scoring single by junior Jason Simpkins (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli). The base hit scored junior Drew Kammerer (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon).
The Grizzlies scored twice in the first inning on a two-run double by junior Braden Pelley (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North). Freshman Frank Podkul (Schererville, Ind./Andrean) connected on a solo home run in the second inning to give Franklin a 3-1 lead.
Manchester would tie the contest behind a two-run fifth inning.
Senior Seth Powers (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield-Central) scatted six hits and struck out six batters in picking up the complete-game victory. The right hander finished the 2015 season with a 4-3 record. He ended his collegiate career ranking second in school history with 224 strikeouts.
The Grizzlies tallied 14 hits in the victory, led by Frey with four hits. Brock added three hits, while senior Tyler Ison (Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland Community) collected two hits. All three position players played in their final collegiate game.
In the opener, sophomore Damon DeJesus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Blackhawk Christian) hit a three-run home run in the second inning to give Franklin a 3-2 lead. It marked his first collegiate home run.
The Spartans hit three home runs in the first game and scored five times in the sixth inning to break the game open.
Seniors Jacob Burns (Avon, Ind./Avon), Lincoln Jones (Ramsey, Ind./North Harrison), and Dylan Reyher (Clinton, Ind./South Vermillion) joined Brock, Frey, and Ison in concluding their playing careers with the contest.
Brock capped his four-year career with the fourth most hits in school history (218), third highest career batting average (.368), and seventh most runs scored (133).
Frey collected 157 hits and scored 118 runs in his playing career. The shortstop batted .375 during the 2015 campaign.
