Box Score Defiance, Ohio - The top three batters in the Franklin College baseball team's lineup tallied seven hits, and senior Seth Powers (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield-Central) tossed a complete game in the Grizzlies' 4-2 win over Defiance College in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference series opener on Friday.
Franklin (10-12, 3-6 HCAC) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Each of the first four batters recorded base hits to account for the two early runs.
Senior Jameson Brock (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) singled home senior Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo). Junior Drew Kammerer (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) then scored on an infield single by junior Braden Pelley (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North).
The Grizzlies added two more runs in the fifth inning when a single by Brock brought home junior Chase Steinbrunner (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) and Frey.
Defiance (8-9, 3-6 HCAC) trimmed the deficit to 4-2 when a fielder's choice by Joel Musser scored two runs.
Powers scattered six hits and struck out seven batters in picking up his first win of the season. The Yellow Jackets threatened to add runs in the eighth inning after a walk and base hit put the potential game-tying run on base. A sacrifice bunt advanced both runners into scoring position. However, Powers got a pop up and a strikeout to end the threat.
"I mixed up the pitches well and was able to throw three pitches for strikes," said Powers. "Having that third pitch helped get out of the eighth inning threat. Getting out that jam gave us a positive jolt to finish off the game. The defense played well today and (catcher) Jackson Freed did a good job behind the plate."
In the ninth inning, Defiance got a leadoff single before the right hander secured the victory by retiring the next three batters.
Brock led Franklin's 10-hit attack, going 2-for-4 with three runs batted in. Frey added three hits and scored two runs, while Kammerer went 2-for-4 with one run scored in the win.
Defiance was led by Quinten Harrington with two hits.
Franklin returns to action when it concludes the three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 4 at noon. Live statistics of both games will be available HERE.
