Franklin, Ind. - Freshman Christian Sullivan (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) tossed a one-hit complete-game in leading the Franklin College baseball team to 4-2 win over Transylvania University in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at John P. McDowell Field.
The team split the doubleheader on Saturday after the Pioneers picked up a 9-1 win in the opener. Franklin captured the home Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) victory by winning two of the three games.
Sullivan retired 15 of the first 16 batters he faced. Leading 3-0 after five innings, Transylvania got on the scoreboard with a balk. Hunter Voshell followed with a single to plate a run and trim Franklin's lead to 3-2. However, Sullivan got a ground ball and fly out to end the inning.
Franklin (15-16, 8-10 HCAC) scored an insurance run on a double by sophomore Jacob Troxell (Lapel, Ind./Lapel). The base hit scored senior Jameson Brock (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) from first base and gave the hosts a 4-2 lead.
Sullivan retired the final 11 batters of the game to improve to 4-2 on the season.
Franklin grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a single by Troxell to score junior Jason Simpkins (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli).
The lead grew to 3-0 in the third inning following a successful double steal as senior Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) stole home. Troxell added a single to plate Brock later in the frame.
Brock and Troxell led Franklin's 10-hit attack each with three hits.
Defensively, junior second baseman Drew Kammerer (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) recorded six assists. Frey, a shortstop, and Simpkins, the third baseman, combined for seven assists. Sullivan recorded 14 ground outs in the game.
In the opener, Transylvania broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the fifth inning. The visitors added two more runs in the sixth inning and plated three runs in the seventh inning to pick up the victory.
Trey Simpson and Taylor Henley each recorded two hits in the contest for Transylvania.
Franklin returns to action when it travels to Hanover College on Tuesday, April 21 at 4 p.m. The team plays at Victory Field in downtown Indianapolis on Thursday, April 23 at 6 p.m. against Mount St. Joseph University.
