Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Earlham

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Franklin, Ind. - Senior Seth Powers (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield-Central) recorded 10 strikeouts over eight innings in leading the Franklin College baseball team to a 5-2 victory in the opener of a doubleheader against Earlham College on Saturday from John P. McDowell Field. The Quakers picked up a 3-1 win in the second game.

Franklin (12-15, 5-9 HCAC) got on the scoreboard first in the opener on a sacrifice fly by freshman Jackson Freed (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) in the fourth inning. Sophomore Jacob Troxell (Lapel, Ind./Lapel) scored on Freed's fly out after opening the frame with a single.

Earlham (20-5, 10-4 HCAC) quickly tied the game in the fifth inning on a solo home run.

The Grizzlies broke the game open by scoring two runs in the sixth and seventh innings to build a 5-1 advantage. Freed drove in his second run of the game with a single in the sixth inning. A double play with the bases loaded and no outs allowed another run to score in the frame.

Senior Dylan Reyher (Clinton, Ind./South Vermillion) gave Franklin a 5-1 lead with a two-run single in the seventh inning.

The Quakers attempted a rally by pushing across one run in the eighth inning. In the ninth inning, the visitors got the first two batters to reach base safely. However, junior Justin Brown (Jimtown, Ind./Jimtown) came in relief and retired the next three batters to pick up the save.

Powers scattered five hits and had 10 strikeouts in picking up his second win of the season, both in HCAC play.

In the second game, Earlham broke a scoreless game with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. The team took a 3-0 lead an inning later on a two-run single.

Franklin attempted a ninth-inning rally when sophomore Damon DeJesus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Blackhawk Christian) drove in Troxell with a single. The hosts brought the potential game-winning run to the plate, but were unable to continue the rally.

Franklin returns to action when it travels to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Tuesday, April 14 at 6 p.m. for a single nine-inning HCAC contest. Live video and statistics of the game will be available.
