Franklin, Ind. - A sacrifice fly by Franklin College senior Jameson Brock (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) scored sophomore Damon DeJesus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Blackhawk Christian) with the winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning to give the Grizzlies a 9-8 victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Tuesday from John P. McDowell Field.
The game was Franklin's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) home opener.
Franklin (9-12, 2-6 HCAC) began the winning rally with DeJesus reaching on a fielding error. A single by junior Chase Steinbrunner (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) moved DeJesus to second base. A sacrifice bunt by senior Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) advanced both baserunners into scoring position. An intentional walk to junior Drew Kammerer (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) loaded the bases with one out in the frame. That's when Brock hit a fly ball to center field that allowed DeJesus to score the decisive run.
Rose-Hulman (10-8, 5-3 HCAC) took a 2-0 lead after scoring runs in the first and second innings.
The Grizzlies got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning as freshman Jackson Freed (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) scored from third base following a wild pitch. Brock then connected on a three-run home run to give Franklin a 4-2 lead. Sophomore Jacob Troxell (Lapel, Ind./Lapel) followed with a two-run home run to cap the six-run frame.
Rose-Hulman tied the game, 7-7, behind a five-run eighth inning, only to see Franklin regain the lead, 8-7, when a throwing error by the Fightin Engineers on a sacrifice bunt attempt gave freshman Adam Daria (Villa Hills, Ky./Dixie Heights) the opportunity to score.
However, the game was tied for the final time, 8-8, in the top of the ninth inning as a groundout by Rose-Hulman's Drew Schnitz helped push home Zach Trusk.
Freshman Logan Macaluso (Kokomo, Ind./Northwestern) picked up the victory with a strong 5.1 innings of extra-inning relief. The right hander allowed two hits and one run to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Junior starting pitcher Justin Brown (Jimtown, Ind./Jimtown) struck out three batters in seven innings.
Brock led the Grizzlies' 10-hit attack with four runs batted in and scoring one run. Junior Joe Ardizzone (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli), Frey, and Troxell each tallied two hits in the victory.
Kevin Jendra went 3-for-4, with two runs scored, to lead Rose-Hulman's 16-hit effort.
Franklin returns to action on Friday, April 3 at 1 p.m. when it travels to Defiance College for a doubleheader in Defiance, Ohio.
