Box Score Anderson, Ind. - The Franklin College baseball team hit three home runs to pick up a 13-5 victory over Anderson University in the opener of a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) doubleheader on Sunday. The victory was the first league triumph for the Grizzlies.
Trailing 2-0 after five innings, the visitors used a five-run sixth inning to take the lead. Two consecutive singles by junior Drew Kammerer (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) and senior Jameson Brock (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) set the table for the big inning. A single by junior Joe Ardizzone (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) plated Kammerer to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Grizzlies (8-10, 1-5 HCAC) took the lead with one swing from the next batter. Sophomore Jacob Troxell (Lapel, Ind./Lapel) connected on a three-run home run to put the team ahead 4-2. A single by senior Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) scored junior Braden Pelley (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) to cap the five-run frame.
Anderson (10-5, 3-2 HCAC) plated two runs in the sixth inning to cut the margin to 5-4. In the seventh inning however the Grizzlies sealed the victory behind a grand slam from Pelley.
Senior Tyler Ison (Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland Community) scored Brock on a fielder's choice to give the visitors a 10-4 lead in the eighth inning. Later, Pelley hit his second home run of the game with a solo homer in the ninth inning. Frey drove in another run with a single and then came around to score on a passed ball.
The Grizzlies collected 13 hits in the victory, including five multiple-hit efforts. Junior Chase Steinbrunner (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) joined Frey, Kammerer, Brock, and Pelley each with two hits.
Junior Hayden Cleveland (Brownsburg, Ind./Cardinal Ritter) recorded six strikeouts and allowed one earned run in the complete-game victory. The left hander picked up his first win of the season.
