Box Score Anderson, Ind. - The Franklin College baseball team split a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) doubleheader at Anderson University on Sunday, winning the opener 13-5 before losing 9-6 in the second game.
Franklin hit three home runs in the opener and scored five runs in the sixth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Sophomore Jacob Troxell (Lapel, Ind./Lapel) hit a three-run home run during the big inning. Later, junior Braden Pelley (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) hit a grand slam as part of a two home run game in the seventh inning. He added a solo home run in the ninth inning.
Five players recorded two hits as the visitors tallied 13 hits in the victory.
Junior Hayden Cleveland (Brownsburg, Ind./Cardinal Ritter) allowed one earned run in a complete-game victory on the mound. The left hander picked up his first win of the season.
In the second game, the Grizzlies scored three times in the fifth and seventh innings to cut the deficit to 7-6. A single by senior Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) got the visitors on the scoreboard. Junior Drew Kammerer (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) drove home two runs with a single in the fifth inning.
Later, Kammerer hit a sacrifice fly to plate Pelley in the seventh inning. A single by senior Jameson Brock (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) scored junior Chase Steinbrunner (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) to cut the deficit to 7-5. A groundout from junior Jason Simpkins (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) plated Frey to cap the team's three-run seventh inning.
Anderson jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four innings behind a two-run second. The Ravens plated two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings to secure the victory.
Franklin returns to action when it travels to Thomas More College for a non-conference contest on Monday, March 30 at 4 p.m. from Crestview Hills, Kentucky. The team hosts Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for the Grizzlies' HCAC home opener on Tuesday, March 31 at 4 p.m. from John P. McDowell Field. Live statistics of both games will be available.
