Westfield, Ind. - Sending 17 batters to the plate to score 12 runs in the eighth inning, the Franklin College baseball team rallied for a 13-5 victory over North Central College (Illinois) on Saturday afternoon from Grand Park.
The Grizzlies (5-2) trailed 5-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning. The first seven batters reached base safely to begin the rally. A single by junior Drew Kammerer (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) scored senior Jameson Brock (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) for the first run of the frame. A bases-loaded walk to junior Joe Ardizzone (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) cut the deficit to 5-3.
Senior Tyler Ison (Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland) tied the game with a two-run single. The hit scored senior Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) and Kammerer. Franklin took its first lead of the game, 6-5, when a single by junior Braden Pelley (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) scored Ardizzone.
Later in the eighth inning, the Grizzlies took an 8-5 lead on a single by freshman Mitch Schuman (Sunman, Ind./East Central). The team added run-scoring base hits by Kammerer and Ardizzone.
North Central (3-2) scored an unearned run in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals plated two runs an inning later to hold a 3-0 advantage. Franklin got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning.
Kammerer led the 10-hit attack with three hits and two runs batted in. He also scored two runs. Ison went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Brock also collected two hits in the victory.
Sophomore Jacob McMain (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) scattered six hits and three runs in 6.2 innings in the starting assignment. Freshman Logan Macaluso (Kokomo, Ind./Northwestern) picked up his first collegiate victory in relief.
