Westfield, Ind. - The Franklin College baseball team opened its home schedule by splitting a doubleheader with Capital University in non-conference action on Wednesday from Grand Park. The Grizzlies won the opening game 7-2, before the Crusaders picked up a 4-3 victory in 10 innings.

Franklin (4-2) collected 14 hits in winning the day's opening game. Eight of those hits came from the top three batters in the lineup, including three-hit efforts by senior outfielder Jameson Brock (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) and senior shortstop Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo).

The Grizzlies took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Junior second baseman Drew Kammerer (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) legged out a triple that scored Frey. Kammerer later scored on a sacrifice fly by senior outfielder Tyler Ison (Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland Community).

The team scored four times in the fifth inning to build a 6-0 advantage. A two-run single by Frey started the scoring. Kammerer connected on his second triple of the contest to plate Frey. A sacrifice fly by Ison brought Kammerer to add another run to the scoreboard.

That offense was enough for junior Justin Brown (Jimtown, Ind./Jimtown) to improve to 2-0 on the season. The right hander allowed five hits and one earned run in seven innings. Freshman Christian Sullivan (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) tossed two scoreless innings in relief.

Kammerer went 2-for-2 with two triples and two runs batted in. Frey scored two runs and drove in two runs during a three-hit game. Freshman outfielder Mitch Schuman (Sunman, Ind./East Central) recorded three hits in the victory.

In the second game, Capital (4-5) scored a run in the top of the 10th inning and then threw out Franklin's potential game-tying run at the plate.

After the Crusaders scored in the top of the first inning, the Grizzlies tied the game on a groundout from Ison in the bottom of the fourth inning. The groundout scored Frey, who reached base safely in all five plate appearances in the game.

The hosts took a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning as Schuman beat out an infield single to score senior Dylan Reyher (Clinton, Ind./South Vermillion). Capital struck back for two runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Franklin then tied the game, 3-3, when a throwing error allowed Kammerer to score with two outs in the inning.

Franklin returns to action on Saturday, March 14 when it hosts North Central College (Illinois) and Adrian College (Michigan).
