Box Score 2 Emerson, Ga. - The Franklin College baseball team split a pair of one-run contests to open the 2015 season in a doubleheader against Augsburg College (Minn.) on Friday at the Perfect Game Turf Complex. The Grizzlies won the nightcap 8-7 after losing the opener 7-6.
The games were the season openers for both teams.
In the opener, Augsburg plated three runs in the first inning. Franklin took a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning after a two-run double by junior Braden Pelley (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North). The hit scored junior Drew Kammerer (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) and senior Tyler Ison (Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland Community).
Both teams plated two runs in the sixth inning, but Augsburg plated one run each in the seventh and eighth innings to pick up the victory.
In the nightcap, Franklin rallied from a 6-2 deficit in the top of the fourth inning. The Grizzlies used a five-run fourth inning to take a 7-6 lead. A two-run double from freshman Mitch Schuman (Sunman, Ind./East Central) started the scoring in the frame. Senior Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) tied the game with a double that scored Schuman. Frey would later score on a double by Kammerer to give the Grizzlies a 7-6 lead.
Augsburg would tie the game with a run in the sixth inning. However, a fielder's choice groundout from sophomore Damon DeJesus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Blackhawk Christian) scored Pelley for the eventual game-winning run.
Freshman Christian Sullivan (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) picked up the victory with four strikeouts in 3.2 innings in relief. Senior Lincoln Jones (Ramsey, Ind./North Harrison) recorded his second career save to secure the win.
The two teams will wrap up the four-game series in Georgia with a doubleheader on Saturday, February 28, starting at 8 a.m.
