Danville, Ky. - The Franklin College men's swimming and diving team opened the 2016 calendar year by winning the Colonel Classic at Centre College. This weekend's meet marked the first performance since the Transylvania Invitational from December 5-6.
Franklin totaled 608 points in edging Berry University (Alabama) for the top spot with 461 points.
The Grizzlies won four of the five relay events and five individual races. Franklin recorded 33 top-five performances during the two-day meet.
Junior Artur Schneider (Zurich, Switzerland) won three individual events and swam a leg on three winning relay teams. He touched the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke (52.56 seconds). Schneider was also victorious in the 100-yard freestyle (48.31 seconds). The junior won the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.40).
Junior Nick Allen (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) edged freshman Rob Warrne (Bowling Green, Ky./Bowling Green) for top honors in the 500-yard freestyle (4:56.39). Allen also won the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.97).
Allen and Schneider were members of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay (1:28.23) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:13.17). Junior Bailey Willoughby (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield-Central) was also a member of both relay teams.
All three also swam a leg on the winning 400-yard medley relay (3:37.24).
The winning 800-yard freestyle relay team of senior Alex Bariyev (Ukraine), freshman Michael Gossett (Bloomington, Ind./Edgewood), Warren, and Allen touched the wall in (7:20.22).
Franklin returns to action on Friday, January 15, at 6:30 p.m. when it hosts DePauw University in a dual meet at Franklin Community High School.
