Kat Lundy Caps Storied Career on Last Day of NCAAs

Kat Lundy competed at the IU Natatorium a few times during all her years of competitive swimming, but this last time meant a little bit more.

By ending her career at the Nat on Saturday in the 200-yard backstroke at the NCAA Division III Championships, the Franklin senior got to go out on a high note. Lundy finished in 2:03.31, which placed her 28th; she had come in as the 31st seed.

Lundy had also competed in the 100 back on Friday, finishing 29th.

"It's super exciting," Lundy said. "It's a great way to end my career — ending at the fastest meet possible is really amazing. And to be able to do it with Celeste (Hollis), who I came in with freshman year, it's really special and incredible."

Hollis had raced on the first three days of the meet, swimming the 50 freestyle as well as the 100 and 200 butterfly. The junior nearly made the B final in the 100 fly, placing 18th and missing the top 16 by .05 seconds.

Getting this initial NCAA experience should benefit Hollis, who has one more year to come back and chase All-America status.

"I can put it on the back burner for memories," she said, "and then I can revisit it next year when I try my best to come back and make finals."

Getting Hollis and Lundy to Indianapolis marked the first time that Franklin had qualified anyone for NCAAs under second-year coach Zach Rayce, who's hoping to make it a habit. Getting the Grizzlies back here, he said, is a big deal.

"It's a great experience, it's great for recruiting," Rayce said. "We've got teammates up in the stands, we've got alumni up in the stands, and it just shows how much it means — not only to the team, but to the community and to the college, and hopefully we can keep representing Franklin on a national level."
