TERRE HAUTE, Indiana — This is what a dynasty looks like.
After cutting things a little closer a year ago, Franklin women's swimming and diving left the competition in its wake this week, putting the finishing touches on its ninth consecutive HCAC championship Saturday night.
The Grizzlies totaled 931 points to finish 360.5 ahead of runner-up Rose-Hulman.
"The girls stepped up in every way possible," Franklin coach Zach Rayce said. "Last year ... we had a few relays disqualified, and this year it was watching our relays get close to (NCAA) B cuts, watching them break records — watching them do things that I've never seen before. It's a lot of fun to be a part of that and see the growth from these young ladies throughout the last year."
"Everybody really put forth their best effort," said senior
Kat Lundy, who was named Swimmer of the Meet for the second year in a row after winning three individual events. "We come out on top because we work the hardest."
Lundy set the tone for the night with a meet-record swim in the 200-yard backstroke. She pulled away from the pack to win in 2:02.55, earning an NCAA B cut in the process. She was joined on the podium by
Bri Gogis (fifth, 2:16.36) and
Jyllian Antle (seventh, 2:17.67).
Just before the backstroke, the Grizzlies got podium finishes in the mile from
Macie McQuinn (second, 18:14.57) and
Carly Houchin (third, 18:30.30).
Petal Sloan, who had established new school and meet records with a 51.57 in the 100 freestyle during the morning preliminaries, came back in the evening to win the event in 51.79. Sloan was joined by three more Grizzlies on the medal stand —
Elizabeth McKittrick (fourth in 55.60),
Landi Newcomb (sixth in 55.74) and
Amelia Hlebak (seventh in 55.83).
Avery Tomlinson was first in the 200 breaststroke, posting a winning time of 2:26.29.
Ella Johnson (fourth, 2:39.42) and
Gracie Hammond (fifth, 2:42.17) joined her on the podium.
Celeste Hollis then followed with a commanding win in the 200 butterfly, going 2:06.54 to win by nearly 13 seconds over teammate Antle (2:19.33).
Annie Jackson was fourth in 2:25.36.
Sophomore
Alexis Fleming was crowned as a diving champion for the second time this week, taking the 3-meter title with an 11-dive score of 422.75 points. Senior teammate
Kaleigh Schuler was second with 366.70 points.
The Grizzlies put the finishing touches on the night with a comfortable win in the 400 freestyle relay. The foursome of Hollis, Tomlinson, Lundy and Sloan posted a time of 3:32.77, a solid 8.6 seconds up on the nearest quartet.
In addition to Lundy's Swimmer of the Meet award, Fleming took Diver of the Meet honors and Rayce repeated as Coach of the Year.
The Grizzlies graduate three swimmers and one diver — Antle, Lundy, Newcomb and Schuler — from this year's squad. They should come back next year as the favorites to win a 10th straight title, but that senior crew will be missed.
"I got to coach these seniors all four years; it's the first group that I've gotten to coach all four years," Rayce said. "I wouldn't change it for the world. They stuck it out, they battled through hard times and great times, and it all pays out in the end. I'm very proud of them."
