For Franklin women's swimming and diving, Friday domination set the stage for yet another Saturday coronation.
Paced by conference-record swims from juniors
Celeste Hollis and
Kat Lundy, the Grizzlies continued their quest for a ninth consecutive HCAC championship by winning all six events on the meet's third night and extending their lead over second-place Rose-Hulman to more than 200 points (627 to 382.5).
The Griz men enter Saturday's final day of competition with 431 points, second behind the host Engineers.
Hollis highlighted the morning preliminaries by swimming the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 55.55 seconds, good enough for an NCAA B cut. She topped that in the evening with a 55.25, an HCAC record and tied for the 10th-fastest time in the nation so far this season.
Lundy, meanwhile, won a pair of individual titles, leading a 1-2-3 sweep in the 400 individual medley and winning the 100 backstroke in a school- and conference-record time of 56.19 seconds.
First, though, she led off the Grizzlies' victorious 200 medley relay. Lundy,
Avery Tomlinson, Hollis and
Landi Newcomb pulled away from the field with a winning time of 1:46.43. The men's quartet of
Sam Hittel,
Nick Coy,
Zachary Jackson-Blaine and
Kaden Cummins was third, hitting the wall in 1:33.90.
In the 400 IM, Lundy touched in 4:41.00 to outpace a pair of teammates. Senior
Jyllian Antle took second in 4:50.68 and sophomore
Bri Gogis was third in 4:52.29. Coy finished sixth on the men's side in 4:23.43.
Hollis' 55.25 in the women's 100 fly paced another strong Franklin showing; Newcomb touched third in 59.72 and freshman
Annie Jackson fourth in 1:00.08. In the men's race, Jackson-Blaine was third in 51.80 and freshman Christopher Mains was seventh in 52.62.
Franklin ran the show in both 200 freestyle finals.
Petal Sloan torched the competition on the women's side to win in 1:53.26, more than four and a half seconds clear of the runner-up. Freshmen
Amelia Hlebak and
Harley Morris finished third (2:00.67) and sixth (2:02.10), respectively.
Freshman
Keaton Stephenson gave the men's team its lone title of the evening, edging teammate Cummins by the slimmest of margins (1:43.16 to 1:43.23) in the 200. Joining those two on the podium were
Isaac Layton (fourth, 1:44.68) and freshman
Bryson Howe (sixth, 1:45.90).
Tomlinson earned her second individual title of the meet by taking the women's 100 breaststroke in 1:07.86. Freshman
Ella Johnson was third (1:11.68) and classmate
Gracie Hammond seventh (1:15.53).
Lundy then won the 100 back, topping her previous season best by two hundredths of a second to remain 22nd in the country. Sophomore
Macie McQuinn wound up fifth in the event at 1:00.94. Hittel was fourth in the men's race at 53.24 and
Will Johnson seventh in 53.82.
The meet will wrap up Saturday with finals in the 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freeestyle, 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relay along with women's 3-meter diving.
