Franklin women's tennis got its fall season underway over the weekend, hosting three matches at the Mickel-Hoover Tennis Complex Saturday and Sunday.
The Grizzlies came away with one win in three tries, posting a 7-0 shutout of Webster while falling to both Trine and Adrian by 6-1 scores.
Emma Tranter was the standout for Franklin on the weekend, getting two victories in singles and two more in doubles. The freshman picked up the Grizzlies' lone point against Trine when she rallied for a 6-3, 6-7, 10-8 victory at second singles.
Against Webster, junior
Ailyn Hendricks and Tranter won by identical 6-1, 6-3 scores in the top two singles positions. Freshman
Reagan Cox earned a 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 triumph at third singles, while
Alleigh Leezer (6-1, 6-4 at No. 4),
Sofie Ballesteros (6-1, 6-0 at No. 5) and
Emma Sappenfield (6-0, 6-0 at No. 6) all won in straight sets. The Grizzlies also swept the doubles matches, with Hendricks and Tranter winning 6-1 at No. 1, Sappenfield and
Eleanor Stillabower picking up a 6-3 victory at No. 2 and Cox and Leezer winning 6-0 in the third spot.
In the Sunday loss to Adrian, Franklin avoided a shutout by winning the doubles point with a pair of 7-6 victories. Tranter and Stillabower came out on top in the No. 2 position, with Ballesteros and Cox prevailing at No. 3. The singles matches were competitive, with Tranter, Leezer and Stillabower all going to a third set before falling short.
The Grizzlies (1-2) return to action this coming Saturday with road matches against Wittenberg and Capital.
