Franklin women's tennis scored perhaps its biggest victory of the season back in mid-March when it pulled out a 4-3 triumph over rival Hanover.
Playing on the Panthers' home courts Tuesday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the HCAC tournament, the Grizzlies were unable to recreate that same magic, suffering a 6-1 setback.
The loss ends Franklin's season with an 11-14 record.
"Not our night tonight," Griz coach Ryan Hammer said.
Hanover seized the upper hand early by sweeping its way to the doubles point and then clinched the match with straight-set victories at first, third and fifth singles. The other three matches all went to a third set, with the Grizzlies' lone point coming in the No. 6 spot with freshman
Alleigh Leezer rallying for a 0-6, 7-6 (7-3), 10-7 triumph. Fellow freshmen
Emma Tranter and
Reagan Cox also forced third-set tiebreaks at second and fourth singles, respectively, before ultimately falling short.
The Grizzlies can keep an optimistic eye toward the future — Tuesday's singles lineup featured four freshmen, a sophomore and a junior. The lone senior in the lineup against the Panthers was
Brenna Atchison, who played at third doubles; Franklin graduates just one other senior,
Michiah Draper.
