RECAP | Grizzlies Knock Off Earlham, Record First 10-Game Winning Streak in 20 Years

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ind. – Powered by a dominant second half at both ends of the floor, the Franklin men's basketball team rolled to a win over the Earlham Quakers on Saturday (Jan. 25) and achieved a feat that hadn't been done by a Franklin team in 20 years.

The Grizzlies (13-4, 9-1 HCAC) out-scored the Quakers (7-10, 3-7 HCAC) 40-27 in the second half to pull away for an 88-67 win. The victory stretches Franklin's winning streak to 10 in a row, marking the first time since 1999-2000 that a Grizzly winning streak has reached double digits.

The Quakers jumped out to an early lead, out-scoring the Grizzlies 15-7 in the game's opening six minutes. Franklin shook off the early deficit and clawed back to tie the game at 25 at the 9:33 mark when Matt Krause knocked down an open jumper.

The next several minutes produced four lead changes and five ties, but a 14-4 Franklin run to close out the half gave the Grizzlies a 48-40 lead. Both teams shot the ball well in the opening half, with Franklin shooting 60.7% (17-for-28) and Earlham knocking down 65.2% (15-for-23) of their attempts. But the long ball proved vital for the Grizzlies in the opening 20 minutes, with Franklin knocking down eight three-pointers to three for the Quakers.

Earlham stayed within striking distance early in the second half and trailed 62-54 with 12:41 to play. But the Grizzlies would put the game out of reach over the next eight minutes, ripping off an 22-4 run to stretch the lead to 84-58 with 4:46 to play. Franklin continued to cook offensively in the second half, shooting better than 50% from the floor. At the other end, the Grizzlies buckled down and held the Quakers to just 35.7% (10-for-28) from the field over the final 20 minutes.

Krause led all players with 21 points, going 8-for-16 from the floor and knocking down five three-pointers. Frontcourt mate Payton Mills matched a career-high with 20 points and the two were joined in double figures by Sam Gutierrez (17 pts) and Kale Morris (13 pts).

The Grizzlies shot 56.5% (35-for-62) on the day, going 12-for-21 from three and 6-for-8 from the line. Krause also led all players with nine rebounds as Franklin finished with a 33-22 advantage on the glass. Franklin assisted on 25 of their 35 field goals with Gutierrez and Borden Kennedy tying for the team lead with six helpers each.

Franklin looks to keep their winning streak alive on Wednesday (Jan. 29) night, when they travel to Lexington, Ky. to take on the Transylvania Pioneers. The opening tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
