RECAP | Grizzlies Close Out Season with Split Against Anderson, Locks Up No. 3 Seed in HCAC Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Franklin College softball team wrapped up the regular season on Sunday (Apr. 28) afternoon, taking on the Anderson Ravens at Behrens Field.

The Grizzlies (18-16, 10-6 HCAC) locked up the three-seed in the conference tournament with a thrilling 6-5 walk-off win in game one. Game two saw the Ravens (18-14, 8-8 HCAC) salvage a split with a 7-4 win in the season finale.

Game One: Franklin 6 – Anderson 5
Anderson took advantage of a pair of Grizzly errors in the third inning, plating three runs in the process. One inning later, the Ravens squandered a golden opportunity to pad their lead, leaving the bases loaded following back-to-back outs to end the frame. The Grizzlies made their opponent pay in the bottom of the fourth, tying the game thanks to a Taylor Bounin RBI double and a two-run single by Shelby Mager to knot things up.

The score stayed tied until the top of the sixth when the Ravens plated their fourth unearned run of the afternoon. Anderson added another run in their half of the seventh and headed into the final inning clutching onto a two-run advantage.

The Grizzlies started their rally with one out in the inning when Natalie Weber doubled into the left field corner. Sydney Logsdon reached on an error and Abby Hickson was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Danielle Wyse. The junior came through in a big spot, tying the game with a two-run single into the left center field game. One batter later, Justice Carmichael brought the game to a thrilling end, bringing home Emily Thompson with a walk-off sacrifice fly.

Kayla Selzer (9-8) battled to earn the win, allowing one earned run on 11 hits with one walk and four strikeouts on 116 pitches.

Game Two: Anderson 7 – Franklin 4
For the second straight game, the Ravens staked their claim to an early lead with a two-run home run in the first inning. The Grizzlies would bounce back in their half of the third inning, taking the lead thank to an RBI ground out by Emily Thompson and a two-run double from Samantha Cain.

But the lead would flip again with the Ravens' next trip to the plate, a four-run fourth inning that made it a 6-3 game. Sydney Logsdon got the Grizzlies within two in the fifth with a run-scoring single, but that was all the Franklin offense was able to generate the rest of the way.

Danielle Wyse (2-2) made her first start of the year in the circle and allowed two earned runs on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts over five innings. Alisha Burch struck out three over the final two innings in relief.

The Grizzlies will turn their focus to the 2019 HCAC Tournament next weekend, and will look to defend their crown as the three-seed. Complete pairings and schedule will be released next week.
