RECAP | Bats Stall Against Calvin in Home Opening Twin Bill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FRANKLIN, Ind. – After rain, snow and cold weather wiped out six straight games, the Franklin College softball team returned to action on Tuesday (Mar. 12) afternoon with a pair of games against the Calvin College Knights in the first games played at Behrens Field in 2019.

In a meeting between two national tournament qualifiers from a year ago, the Grizzlies (0-3) came up on the short end of both contests, with the Knights (2-0) taking the opener 5-4 and the night cap 6-0.

Junior Danielle Wyse finished with a team-high four hits on the afternoon, but the Grizzly bats would struggle to string together hits on the day. Franklin drew 11 walks total over the twin bill, but recorded just nine hits and left 15 runners on base.

Game One: Calvin 5 – Franklin 4

Wyse opened the scoring in the bottom half of the first inning with the first of three hits in game one. With two outs and runners on the corners, Wyse, tapped a ground ball into shallow right field, scoring Monica Collins for a 1-0 Franklin lead.

The Knights would squander a bases loaded opportunity with one out in the second, but would erase the Franklin lead in their half of the third inning when the first four batters reached base, scoring a trio of runs to make it a 3-1 game.

After leaving two runners on in the third, the Grizzlies rallied with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Franklin drew three straight walks to load the bases and bring Shelby Mager to the dish, where she followed suit and compounded with a wild pitch, the Grizzlies were able to score a pair of runs on the play and even the score.

But Calvin would answer with one run in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Down to their last out, Wyse cut the lead in half with a line drive single to left that scored Mager from third. Sydney Logsdon followed with a single and Abby Hickson was intentionally walked to load the bags for Taylor Bounin. But the rally would end there as Bounin grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.

Kayla Selzer (0-2) went the distance for the Grizzlies, allowing three earned runs while walking one and striking out five.

Game Two: Calvin 6 – Franklin 0

The Knights took the lead for good just four batters in with the third of six singles in the opening frame that led to four runs in the first. Calvin would tack on runs in the second and third innings to make it a 6-0 game.

Franklin would threaten in their half of the fourth inning, loading the bases with nobody out but they couldn't push a run across. The Grizzlies also put runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings, but came up empty on the scoreboard.

Sophomore Alisha Burch (0-1) made her first start of the year, walking one and striking out five while tossing her first career complete game. Justice Carmichael was the lone Grizzly with multiple hits in the night cap, ripping a pair doubles.

Franklin looks to get in the win column on Wednesday (Mar. 13), when they head to Grand Park in Westfield, Ind. to take on the DePauw Tigers. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
