Box Score 2 Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College softball recorded a pair of shutouts to earn a doubleheader sweep against Bluffton University, winning 2-0 and 13-0 in five innings on Saturday in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action from Behrens Field.
The Grizzlies established a new school record for wins in a season by picking up their 23rd victory of the season. Franklin had matched the program's single-season win record with 21 victories during the 2015 and 2014 seasons.
Senior Katie Struewing (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) hit a two-run double with two outs in the fifth inning to break a scoreless game in the opener. The base hit scored juniors Megan Lalioff (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) and Sara Thom (Mooresville, Ind./Monrovia).
Sophomore left-handed starting pitcher Olivia Paszek (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) scattered six hits and recorded six strikeouts in tossing the shutout. She improved to 14-4 on the season with the victory.
Struewing led Franklin's offensive attack in the opener by going 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Sophomore Morgan Burch (Coatesville, Ind./Cascade) collected two hits.
In the second game, Franklin (23-11, 8-6 HCAC) scored six runs in the first inning to take control of the contest. The Grizzlies tallied 13 hits and had four players have two or more hits.
Struewing started the six-run first inning with a double to plate Lalioff. Junior Savannah Blevins (Wilkinson, Ind./Eastern Hancock) and Struewing would later score on a twor-un single from sophomore Grace Paszek (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) to give Franklin a 3-0 advantage. Junior Taylor Johnson (Beech Grove, Ind./Beech Grove) legged out a triple to cap the early scoring.
The hosts added four more runs in the second inning and scored three runs in the fourth inning.
Struewing went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Johnson also went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in. Junior Jasmine Hanna (Frankfort, Ind./Clinton Prairie) scored three runs and collected two hits. Grace Paszek drove in three runs and was 2-for-2 in the second game.
Senior Bri McClellan (Huntington, Ind./Huntington North) tossed five scoreless inning and allowed just three hits to improve to 6-3 on the season.
Franklin moved to third place in the HCAC standings with an 8-6 league record. The Grizzlies conclude the regular season with a home doubleheader against Defiance College on Saturday, April 30 at 1 p.m. from Behrens Field.
