Offense Shines in Softball Sweep over Kalamazoo

Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College softball team scored 20 runs in earning a doubleheader sweep over Kalamazoo College in the 2016 home opener on Sunday from Behrens Field. The Grizzlies won the opener 7-0 before picking up a 13-1 win in five innings in the second contest.

Franklin (6-4) has won four consecutive games after defeating Wartburg College and Mount Vernon Nazarene University to conclude the team's annual trip to Florida on March 1.

Freshman Brittany Duncan (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) collected three hits to lead the offensive attack. Junior Megan Lalioff (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) scored three runs from the top of the batting order. Senior Katie Struewing (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) had a pair of groundouts to drive in a run during the third and fifth innings.

Sophomore Olivia Paszek (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) scattered five hits in picking up the shutout victory in the circle. The left-handed pitcher improved to 5-1 on the season.

Franklin got on the scoreboard in the second inning on a double by sophomore Grace Paszek (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) to score junior Sara Thom (Mooresville, Ind./Monrovia).

Later, the Grizzlies broke the game open behind a four-run sixth inning. Freshman Shelby Mager (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) hit a sacrifice fly to score freshman Monica Collins (Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland Community) to put Franklin ahead 4-0. Consecutive run-scoring doubles by junior Taylor Johnson (Beech Grove, Ind./Beech Grove) and Lalioff increased the margin to 6-0. Lalioff later scored on a throwing error following a base hit by Duncan.

In the second game, Franklin scored seven times in the second inning and added six runs in the fourth inning to pick up the victory. Lalioff hit a two-run single and Struewing followed with a two-run home run to lead the offensive attack in the second inning.

Sophomore McKinley Choate (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) drove in three runs and scored one run. Sophomore Devon Joray (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) went 2-for-3 with one run batted in and one run scored. Lalioff scored two runs and added two hits. Collins drove in two runs from the top of the batting order.

Senior Bri McClellan (Huntington, Ind./Huntington North) scattered two hits in picking up her first victory of the season in the complete-game performance.

Franklin is scheduled to return on Saturday, March 12, at noon when it hosts DePauw University from Behrens Field.
