Box Score 2 Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College softball team earned a doubleheader split against Mount St. Joseph University to begin Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play on Saturday from Behrens Field.
The Grizzlies won the second game 10-2 in five innings after MSJ picked up a 4-2 triumph in eight innings during the opener.
Franklin (10-6, 1-1 HCAC) scored three runs in the first inning before plating five runs in the second inning. Junior Baylea Suiters (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran) drove in the first two runs of the second inning on a double. She later scored on single from sophomore Grace Paszek (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) to give the hosts a 6-0 lead. Junior Jasmine Hanna (Frankfort, Ind./Clinton Prairie) capped the big second inning with a two-run double.
An inning later, junior Megan Lalioff (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) connected on a run-scoring single to put the Grizzlies ahead 9-1. She later scored on a single from Paszek.
Paszek led the offensive attack with three runs batted in (RBI) and two hits. Lalioff scored three runs from the top of the batting lineup. Suiters and Hanna each added two RBI in the victory.
Senior Bri McClellan (Huntington, Ind./Huntington North) allowed one run in picking up her second victory of the season in the circle.
In the opener, Franklin scored two runs in the first inning. Senior Katie Struewing (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) recorded a run-scoring single during the early offensive attack.
However, MSJ (8-7-1, 1-1 HCAC) tied the game at 2-2 on a solo home run in the sixth inning. The Lions pushed across two runs in the eighth inning and withstood a rally attempt from the Grizzlies. Hanna tallied a single to put the potential game-winning run at the plate. However, two fly outs and a groundout ended the threat.
Franklin returns to action on Monday, March 28, at 4:30 p.m. when it travels to Berea College for a non-conference doubleheader. The team will play road games at Hanover College, Transylvania University and Maryville College of Tennessee from March 29-31.
