Indianapolis, Ind. - The Franklin College women's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) tournament with a 5-0 victory against Transylvania University during the first round on Friday at the West Indy Racquet Club.
Franklin, the tournament's No. 3 seed, avenged a 7-2 loss during the regular season to the Pioneers. The Grizzlies face No. 2 seed Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the HCAC semifinals on Saturday, October 15 at 1 p.m.
Franklin (7-5) swept all three doubles matches to grab early momentum of the match. Sophomores Karen Dringenburg and Rachel Rose did not lose a game on the No. 1 doubles court. Senior Emily Helvie and junior Megan Battles recorded an 8-5 triumph at No. 2 doubles. Junior Jessica Baker and sophomore Alexa Schofner won a hard-fought 9-7 match on the No. 3 doubles court.
In singles, Dringenburg lost only one game from the top of the singles lineup. Sophomore Holyn Eldridge clinched the team victory with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph at No. 3 singles.
