Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College women's tennis improved to 4-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play with a 9-0 victory over Manchester University on Saturday from the West Indy Racquet Club.
The match was moved indoors due to weather. Franklin (6-0, 4-0 HCAC) has won 52 of 54 matches competed this fall, including a 36-0 singles record.
The team quickly grabbed momentum of the match by dropping a combined four games in the three doubles matches. The tandem of freshman Karen Dringenburg (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) and senior Melissa Sanders (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) picked up an 8-1 victory on the No. 1 court.
Junior Emily Helvie (Batesville, Ind./Batesville) and freshman Holyn Eldridge (Goshen, Ind./Concord) were also victorious by an 8-1 score at No. 3 doubles.
Senior Chelsea Howell (West Harrison, Ind./Franklin County) teamed with freshman Rachel Rose (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) to drop only two games on the No. 2 doubles court.
The Grizzlies maintained the momentum in singles, winning five of the six matches in straight sets.
Senior Chelsea Platt (Shelbyville, Ind./Morristown) earned a 6-1, 6-0 triumph on the No. 6 singles court. Classmate Emily Roberts (Franklin, Ind./Edinburgh) won by a 6-3, 6-1 score at No. 4 singles.
Rose did not lose a game on the No. 5 court. Dringenburg recorded a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 3 singles position. Howell won by identical 6-1 set scores at No. 2 singles.
Sanders earned a three-set victory at the top of the singles lineup to round out the winners. After losing the opening set 6-4, she won the second set with a 6-1 score. Sanders did not lose a game in the deciding third set to secure the victory.
Franklin returns to action when it hosts Mount St. Joseph University on Wednesday, September 23, at 5 p.m. from the Mickel-Hoover Tennis Complex.
