Anderson, Ind. - The Franklin College women's tennis team improved to 3-0 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) with an 9-0 road win over Anderson University on Wednesday evening.
Franklin (5-0, 3-0 HCAC) got off to a strong start by sweeping all three doubles matches. Senior Melissa Sanders (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) teamed with freshman Karen Dringenburg (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) to lose only one game at No. 1 doubles.
Senior Chelsea Howell (West Harrison, Ind./Franklin County) and partner freshman Rachel Rose (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) picked up an 8-3 victory on the No. 2 doubles court.
Junior Emily Helvie (Batesville, Ind./Batesville) and freshman Holyn Eldridge (Goshen, Ind./Concord) lost only one game at the No. 3 doubles position.
In singles, the Grizzlies remained perfect on the season (30-0). Sanders earned a straight-set win at the top of the lineup. Howell won by 6-1, 6-3 scores on the No. 2 singles court.
Senior Emily Roberts (Franklin, Ind./Edinburgh) was also a straight-set winner on the No. 4 court. Rose did not lose a game in winning at No. 5 singles.
Dringenburg recorded a hard-fought three-set win at No. 3 singles. She won a first set in a tiebreaker by a 7-5 score. Anderson's Abby Kirkman rebounded with a 6-3 score in the second set. However, Dringenburg regained momentum of the match to win the third-set tiebreaker 10-6.
Senior Chelsea Platt (Shelbyville, Ind./Morristown) also won in three sets at No. 6 singles. After losing the first set 6-3, she bounced back to win the second set by a 6-2 score. Platt was victorious in the third-set tiebreaker 10-5 to win the hard-fought singles match.
Franklin returns to the court on Saturday, September 19, at noon when it hosts Manchester University from the Mickel-Hoover Tennis Complex.
