Box Score 2 Defiance, Ohio - The Franklin College softball team matched the school record with 21 victories in a season with a 7-1 and 9-2 doubleheader sweep on Sunday against Defiance College in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action to conclude the 2015 season.
Franklin (21-13, 8-8 HCAC) tied the single-season school record of victories set last spring. The team's conference record is the third consecutive .500 or better HCAC mark.
The Grizzlies jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings in the opener. A two-run double in the third inning by sophomore Baylea Suiters (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran) gave the visitors a 3-0 advantage.
Junior McKensie Vanosdol (North Vernon, Ind./Jennings County) followed with double to plate Suiters later in the frame. A ground out by senior Jessica Ayers (Frankfort, Ind./Frankfort) put Franklin ahead 5-0.
Sophomore Taylor Johnson (Beech Grove, Ind./Beech Grove) led the team's 12-hit attack in the opener, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Sophomore Megan Lalioff (Fishers, Ind./Fishers), junior Katie Struewing (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) and Vanosdol each added two hits in the victory.
Freshman Olivia Paszek (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) struck out nine batters in the complete-game victory in the pitching circle. The left hander scattered six hits.
In the second game, Franklin once again got out to a big lead behind a five-run second Inning. The Grizzlies added two runs in the third inning to hold an 8-1 advantage.
Freshman Grace Paszek (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) had a run-scoring double to start the big second inning. Lalioff followed with a single to plate Grace Paszek to give Franklin a 3-0 lead.
Vanosdol hit a single to drive in Lalioff and a fielding error on the same play allowed Suiters to score from first base. Suiters gave Franklin an 8-1 lead on a two-run single in the third inning.
Vanosdol and Struewing each tallied three hits in the second-game victory. Sophomore Jasmine Hanna (Frankfort, Ind./Clinton Prairie) and Grace Paszek each rounded out the multiple-hit performers with two hits.
Vanosdol allowed four hits and one earned run in six innings to pick up the victory in the circle. Freshman Steph Smith (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) tossed a scoreless seventh inning to secure the win.
Sunday's games concluded the career of Ayers, who was a two-time All-HCAC performer and ranks in the top five in school history for career hits and stolen bases.
