Offense Shines in Softball Sweep against Transylvania

Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College softball team tallied 19 runs and 25 hits in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) doubleheader sweep against Transylvania University, 10-2 in five innings and 9-1 in six innings, on Tuesday afternoon from Behrens Field.

Franklin (19-13, 6-8 HCAC) got off to a quick start with three runs each in the first and second innings to take 6-2 lead. Senior Jessica Ayers (Frankfort, Ind./Frankfort) drove in two runs during the first inning.

In the second inning, sophomore Taylor Johnson (Beech Grove, Ind./Beech Grove) legged out a double that scored sophomore Jasmine Hanna (Frankfort, Ind./Clinton Prairie). Sophomore Megan Lalioff (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) followed with a triple. Sophomore Baylea Suiters (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran) capped the scoring with a single to plate Lalioff.

The Grizzlies scored four times in the fourth inning to break the game open. A two-run double by Suiters gave the hosts an 8-2 lead. Later in the frame, sophomore Savannah Blevins (Wilkinson, Ind./Eastern Hancock) hit a two-run double to score Suiters and junior Katie Struewing (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood).

Suiters led Franklin's 12-hit attack, tallying three hits and driving in four runs. Lalioff went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Hanna and Johnson each recorded two hits in the victory.

Freshman Olivia Paszek (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) struck out nine batters in picking up the complete-game victory in the circle. The left hander improved to 10-6 on the season.

In the second game, the hosts scored five times in the sixth inning to pick up the triumph. Blevins went 3-for-4 and hit a solo home run in the fifth inning. She later added a double in the sixth inning that scored Struewing that ended the contest. Struewing drove in two runs with a double earlier in the sixth inning.

Lalioff went 2-for-2 with two runs scored at the top of the batting lineup. Suiters also chipped in two hits. Johnson drove in three runs.

Franklin scored during five of the six innings. The Grizzlies took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a single by Struewing. A single by Johnson in the second inning pushed the team's lead to 2-0. Franklin held a 3-0 advantage after a successful squeeze bunt by Johnson that allowed Ayers to score in the fourth inning.

Junior McKensie Vanosdol (North Vernon, Ind./Jennings County) allowed just three hits in tossing the complete game for her fifth win of the season.

Franklin returns to action on Saturday, April 25 at 1 p.m. when it travels to Defiance College for a HCAC doubleheader.
