Westfield, Ind. - Franklin College freshman pitcher Olivia Paszek (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) scattered four hits and had four strikeouts while tossing a complete-game shutout in the softball team's 1-0 win over No. 25-ranked DePauw University in the opener of Sunday's doubleheader at Grand Park.
DePauw (7-3) picked up a 5-4 win in the nightcap as the two Indiana teams split the doubleheader.
Junior Katie Struewing (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) lined a single in the top of the first inning to score sophomore Megan Lalioff (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) with the winning run in the first game.
Paszek made that early offense stand up, and kept the Tigers from scoring the tying run, with the help of two key defensive plays.
DePauw had runners on first and second base in the sixth inning before sophomore third baseman Jessica Thom (Monrovia, Ind./Monrovia) caught a soft line drive to end the rally.
In the seventh inning, DePauw got an infield single with one out. However, sophomore catcher Taylor Johnson (Beech Grove, Ind./Beech Grove) caught the opposing base runner on a steal attempt.
Paszek improved to 4-2 on the season in the circle, and had the second complete-game victory of the weekend, after helping the Grizzlies to a win over Cleary University (Michigan) on Saturday at Grand Park.
In the second game, the Tigers scored two runs in the first inning to take the early lead. Franklin cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third inning on a fielder's choice by junior McKensie Vanosdol (North Vernon, Ind./Jennings County). The play with the bases loaded scored Lalioff.
The Grizzlies (7-5) used a three-run sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead. Freshman McKinley Choate (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) scored on a wild pitch to tie the game after Vanosdol led off the inning with a double. Later, Johnson gave the team the lead, 3-2, on a single to score junior Madison Parker (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community). Junior Anne Schwomeyer (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) lined a single to score sophomore Jeana Gregory (Mooresville, Ind./Monrovia) to give Franklin a 4-2 lead.
However, DePauw answered with a three-run sixth inning to regain the one-run lead, 5-4, and retired Franklin in order in the top of the seventh inning to secure the victory.
Franklin returns to action on Saturday, March 21, at 1 p.m. when it opens Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader at Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio.
