Softball Splits Second Day at Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Fort Myers, Fla. - The Franklin College softball team improved to 3-1 on the season by splitting a pair of games at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Sunday afternoon.

The Grizzlies defeated Newbury College (Mass.) 9-3 in the opener before losing a hard-fought 3-2 contest to York University (Pa.).

Franklin broke a 3-3 tie behind a six-run sixth inning in the Newbury game. Junior Anne Schwomeyer (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) had the big hit in the frame with a two-run single. The hit gave the Grizzlies a 9-3 advantage and plated freshman Steph Smith (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) and junior Katie Struewing (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood). Franklin scored its six runs with just two hits in the inning.

Newbury jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning. However, the Grizzlies responded with three runs in the bottom of the first inning to square the contest. A run-scoring single by sophomore Baylea Suiters (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran) brought home senior Jessica Ayers (Frankfort, Ind./Frankfort). Back to back bases-loaded walks to sophomore Jasmine Hanna (Frankfort, Ind./Clinton Prairie) and junior Michelle Murphy (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) capped the early scoring.

Freshman Olivia Paszek (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) struck out 10 batters and allowed two hits in the complete-game victory. The left hander stands 2-0 on the season.

The Grizzlies received 11 walks in the victory.

Against York, the team battled back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game with one run each in the fourth and fifth innings. York scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

A single by Struewing scored Franklin's first run of the game. Junior McKensie Vanosdol (North Vernon, Ind./Jennings County) scored on a double by Ayers to tie the game at 2-2 in the fifth inning.

Franklin continues its season-opening trip in Fort Myers, Florida with a pair of games on Monday, March 2. The team battles Northland University (Wis.) at 11 a.m. before facing St. John Fisher University (N.Y.) at 1 p.m. Live statistics of the game against St. John Fisher will be available HERE.
